Introduction 

Family firms are the most popular form of ownership models all over the world. Family businesses form the backbone of the Indian economy with approximately 85% of business firms being family controlled. About 73% of top 500 BSE firms and 50% of Nifty 50 are family owned. Yet most courses in B-Schools are aimed at developing employees for professionally managed large corporations. This course is developed with the sole objective of critically analysing the issues faced by family firms and enabling them to transform themselves using cutting-edge management and entrepreneurship research.

The objective of the program will be to help owners/members of family businesses to:

  • Gain perspective on the opportunities and challenges posed by the current volatile and complex business environment
  • Develop and harness digital and analytical capabilities for competitive advantage
  • Utilize conceptual tools and frameworks to manage and advance their business in this fast-paced digital era
  • Manage the talent and competence of resources available to the family business

Program Content

Term I: Critical Appreciation of State of Affairs

  1. Strategic Analysis of Family Firms: Role of Family Values, Vision, Managing Business Network – suppliers, clients etc., Criticality of macro-economic factors, profitability in volatile and uncertain environment
  2. Managing People and Self:  Delegation of responsibility, prioritization, motivation of employees, decision making, managing beyond fire-fighting day to day activities
  3. Financial reporting and legal aspects: Reporting, taxation, Compliance to laws as applicable, basics of accounting, Impact of policies
  4. Entrepreneurship: From Idea to Implementation
  5. Marketing: Managing Clients – B2B and B2C

Terms II: Preparing for State of the Art: Part 1 – Professionalization

  1. Strategy Making for Family Firms: Introduction to Business Plan, Competition analysis
  2. Organization Structure and Design: Establishing departments, Formalization, Basics of Human Resource Planning and setting up HR processes
  3. Enabling Business through IS
  4. Marketing: Managing Brand Image
  5. Data Analytics: Increasing efficiency
  6. Governance: Having a Board, Independent Directors, Thinking beyond laws, Social Responsibility.

Term III: Preparing for State of the Art: Part 2 – Scaling Up

  1. Corporate Finance: Financial management: Asset, Loan, Equity and Debt
  2. Entrepreneurship: Managing investors, Managing Exit
  3. Marketing: Launching new products and services
  4. Managing growth: Diversification and managing strategic paradox of efficiency and innovation
  5. Leadership, Succession Planning and Talent Management

Term IV: Term Project

Program Duration and Delivery

Duration of the program will be 1 year. This will include 320 hours of learning with a mix of Offline Sessions, Online Sessions and Project Work.

Online sessions will be conducted through Direct2Device (D2D) Platform.

Eligibility Criteria and Selection Procedure

Candidate must fulfil the following criteria to be considered for admission:

  • Graduation/Post-graduation in any discipline
  • Must be actively involved in a family business for a minimum of one year

The candidates meeting the above eligibility conditions will be interviewed and final offers for admission will be made.

Program Fee

Program Fee: 4,80,000/-+ (applicable taxes)

Campus Fee: 1,20,000­*/- +(applicable taxes)

*Inclusive of Boarding, lodging, food and course material

International Immersion: The participants will have to arrange for airfare, local conveyance, boarding, and lodging.
