Mizoram Governor Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma advocates for expedited economic development of the North Eastern states

“The feeling of isolation, ethnic differences, poor connectivity and turbulent political scenarios are factors that contributed to North-East becoming one of the weakest links to our country’s development,” said Hon. Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma, Governor of Mizoram. He suggested working at the grass-root level to go beyond these traditional jargons and developing North-East as an economic front.

Lt. Gen. Sharma was addressing the students at IIM Rohtak, where he urged the budding managers to look for strategic business opportunities in the North-East and devise new tools for the same. The theme for the talk was – “Look East Policy: Business and Governance in North-East”.

Emphasizing on the geo-strategic importance of the North-Eastern region, he said, “The Asia-Pacific region encompassing India, China and the South East Asian countries has emerged as the epicenter of the world trade and it is likely to remain so for the next two decades. The North-eastern states lying at the heart of this region has a tremendous role to play in this burgeoning trade.”
Honorable Governor continued, “Although the North-East harbors only 3.1% of our nation’s population, yet it holds the power to satiate almost 45% of our nation’s clean energy demands. So, there’s an ardent need to develop long term solutions for development in this sector focusing on a 1000 km radius with centre point at North-East.”

Lt. Gen. Sharma pointed out that 5000 km of railways, waterways and airways along with 10,000 km of roadways are necessary for facilitating proper connectivity and development in the NE region.  He concluded by saying, “Explore the avenues of organic farming, tourism and health sector in the North-East to truly move towards the development of the country as a whole.”

Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director IIM Rohtak summed up the proceedings by focusing on the emergence of MSME sectors in the NE and the need to bring in further developments in this sector. He advised the students to develop interest in rural and specialized group projects in the NE region.
