8th Foundation Day Celebration at IIM Rohtak
The event was started with lighting the lamp of knowledge by Prof. Atanu Rakshit, and he has address addressed the gathering on the occasion. In his inaugural address he emphasis on the Institute achievements of in past 7 Years of its’ journey.
Owning the surgical strikes brought a historical change in India’s stance on the global stage
Speaking of the surgical strikes that made the headlines following the Uri attacks, Major General Amarjit Singh said, “Once the govt owned the surgical strikes, this led to a shift in our stance from a defensive nation to an offensive one. The uproar and debates that followed were a result of this attack on our core beliefs”. He added, “If this is indeed our new strategy, there have to be more demonstrative events in the future.”
“The battle today is not won on the field but in minds of the public. The battlefield has shifted from territory to money and has finally has come to be fought in the minds of the people,” he added. A Vishisht Seva Medal Awardee, Major General Singh was speaking on the occasion of the eighth Foundation Day of IIM Rohtak.
Speaking on the role of corporates in governance, he warned, “Corporates are increasingly getting into governance, making the government compromise on its policies to cater to their interests.”
When asked on the role of media in today’s world, Major Gen. Singh said, “The media today is more powerful than even the atomic bomb. However, it can be used both constructively or otherwise.” He further lamented, “Media, sometimes, get influenced by those in power.”
The event also witnessed an engrossing address by Mr. Amit Baruah, Managing Editor, The Hindu. When asked to comment on the change that he has witnessed in journalism over his long career he regretted, “Journalism has changed in the fact that the it is now manipulated by the power of money; it has now become a business. The sourcing of news is one of the most important aspects that a media house should focus on. News has become so instant that fact checking is not done.”
Speaking on the US President elect Donald Trump, Mr. Baruah hoped that he plays by the rules. “He represents a threat to the International order and going by the things that he has said, if he acts upon them, we are in for troubled times,” he added.
The event on the theme, “India and the Shift in Global Power Dynamics”, also saw the presence of Padma Bhushan Dr. Thirumalachari Ramasami, former Indian Science and Technology Secretary.
