4th HR Summit at Indian Institute of Management Rohtak to discuss the “Young and the Restless”

 

 

 

Rohtak, August 2, 2014: Indian Institute of Management Rohtak, held its fourth HR Summit on 2nd August 2014. The key objective of the Summit was to facilitate discussion on new ways of managing new generation employees and the human resource (HR) challenges faced while addressing their needs. In the light of changing employee mindsets, organizations often feel the need to change their conventional strategies. With active participation of industrial stalwarts, academicians and students, the Summit sought to analyze the HR challenges of this decade.

In his opening speech, Former Director of IIM Rohtak, Prof. P Rameshan underlined the importance of this 4th HR Summit in light of existing contradictions between the older and new generations.

The first panel focused on the economic uncertainties posed by business slowdown and the challenges faced by employees in midst of these road blocks.  Mr Gaganjot Singh (Director, Finance and Operations, Michelin India Pvt. Ltd.) who moderated the discussion emphasized that the Gen Y employees must  take into consideration the ground realities of Indian bureaucratic and economic system. He described the Gen Y in five crisp words, Innovation, Interconnection, Information Technology, Individualism and Impatience and also mentioned that these 5 I’s could be an asset in the current corporate scenario. Mr Nirupam Shrivastava (Senior Leader Consulting Division, IBM India) highlighted the need to refocus on HR roles and how to take advantage of global slowdown.  Lt. Col. (Retd.) Kuldeep Gahlaut (VP HR and OD, Ashiana Housing Ltd.) and Mr. Debadatta Baxi (AGM, McCain Foods India) also shared their valuable thoughts.

The second panel discussion was on the role of innovation and creativity with new generation workforce in any organization. Mr. Vijay Sethi (CIO and VP, IS and HR, Hero MotoCorp Ltd.), Dr V P Singh (ED and Chief Pupil, R J Corp.), Mr. Sandeep Girotra (Senior VP and Head Global HR, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd.), Mr. Aditya Chakravarty (Head HR, Spice Retails Ltd.) and Mr. Suresh Kumar (Senior VP – HR, Mafatlal Industries Ltd.)  were the esteemed panelists and they discussed the low level of innovation in India, and how organizations can help in promoting the spirit of ‘Creativity’.

The next two sessions covered the impact social media on HR management and how to completely benefit from the working potential of the new generation. The panels comprised of leaders from both manufacturing and services sector.  Mr. Saurabh Sharma (Service Delivery Leader-Recruitment, American Express India Pvt. Ltd.), Mr. G K Kwatra (VP, HR and Administration, Havells India Ltd.), Mr. Pradeep Deshpande (Global Head HR, Schneider Electric India), Mr. Jacob Jacob (Chief People Officer, Apollo Hospitals) were among the dignitaries who provided their valuable insights.

The last panel discussion was regarding the need for new work models for this generation. Mr Rajesh Kargeti (VP – HR, Majestic Auto Ltd.) and Mr Arvind Pachauri (VP and Country Head HR – Alstom T&D India Ltd) commented on the growing need of functional work architectures attractive for the young work force.

With active discussions and insightful ideas the  4th HR summit organized by IIM Rohtak, was a huge and resounding success. The event was truly in line with the spirit of the Institute becoming a global center for learning and knowledge creation.
