Induction Programme PGP-08 Batch (2017-19)

Indian Institute of Management Rohtak commenced its 3-days induction cum orientation programme from June 30 for the 8th batch of Post Graduate Programme (PGP) of 2017-19 session.

The event started off with the pledge taken by 262 students of PGP-08 to mark their new journey at IIM Rohtak by learning and imbibing the IIM culture and getting mentally prepared for the upcoming academic rigour, which will help them become future management leaders.

Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director IIM Rohtak honoured and welcomed the distinguished guests Dr. Satya Pal Singh (Former Police Commissioner of Mumbai and Member of Parliament) and Capt. Abhimanyu (Hon’ble Cabinet Minister, Govt. of Haryana).

In his keynote address, Capt. Abhimanyu welcomed the newly inducted batch Rohtak city. He laid stress on the passage of the new journey that is going to take them way forward in life by learning the nuances and skills of management in the span of two competitive years in this august institute. He asserted that IIM Rohtak is on a quest to produce the best of the managers and CEOs in the world. By addressing the students he said that they have to live up to the reputation of the Institute. The conduct, work ethics and decisions as responsible leaders will determine their destination. He also emphasized the importance of Indian philosophical and theological values from Vedas, Bhagwat Gita, Upanishads, Arthashastra and Manusmriti and urged the faculty members of the Institute to explore these rich treasures of knowledge for scientific management research.

The second keynote speaker Dr. Satya Pal Singh, motivated the students to be physically fit, mentally alert and socially adjustable. He emphasized that the essence of management is to achieve internal peace. One should be like the Sun, which dispels darkness and illuminates the universe. In order to become a global leader, one must be a path breaker. Dr. Singh educated the students that since world has become a global village, managers must evolve and grow to become global leaders.

The session was culminated on an inspiring and motivation note when Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director IIM Rohtak proudly declared that Institute has successfully achieved its set target of inducting 262 students in PGP-08 batch with academic diversity and enhanced percentage of girl students. He congratulated his admission team and others who had supported the mammoth and grueling admission task entrusted to IIM Rohtak for 9 IIMs. Prof. Sharma stated that ethical ideology is most important foundation for successful managers. Prof Sharma spoke about values of IIM-culture in good governance and good management. He emphasized that NCR is already growing at a fast pace and the institute has the potential to be partner in this exponential growth journey of NCR in the years to come.

Admission Statistics

  • The batch size increased by 69.67 percent over the last year.
  • A substantial increase of 300 percent in the number of female candidates joining the institution.
  • An increase in number of non-engineers by 136 percent over the last year.


    The second session for the event begins with a talk on ‘’Governance in Conflict Zones’ by Mr. Waheed Rehman Para, Youth Icon and Political Analyst, J&K. At first Mr. Rehman throws clarity on importance of governance in conflicting zones such as Kashmir. He emphasized the need of change in the mind-set of the policymakers from policing the children to right parenting and engaging them in creating activities such as sports and extra-curricular events. He talked about need for good governance policies in human resource management domain in the state of J&K. He talked about role of media in presenting the right image for the state of J&K. He said he was hoping that Prof Sharma, faculty of IIMR, and students of IIMR would help in developing strategy for positive image development of the state of J&K.

    Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director IIM Rohtak opined that many problems of J&K are of basic management. He urged the students to understand on how to make to conduct business in turbulent areas. He spoke of presence of many FMCG companies, Automobile companies, Electronic companies etc. in J&K and urged students to study how firms successfully operate in turbulent areas and conflict zones. He thanked J&K government’s interest in engaging IIM-Rohtak for development of youth policy, sports policy, and media policy for the state of J&K.

    This was followed by another panel discussion on ‘IIM-Culture’, which is most important and integral part of the PGP induction programme. Prof Jagdeep S. Chhokar and Prof I M Pandey were the eminent panellist, both held the appointment of Director-In Charge of IIM Ahmedabad in the past. He said that IIMs believe in co-creation of content between the student and faculty and thus, he informed student to be prepared with cases and have spirited discussion in classes to get full benefits from case-based pedagogy.

    Prof. IM Pandey accentuated that IIM Culture is very rigorous and fiercely competitive. He mentioned the example of IIM-A, where in the respect for intellectuals is treated as an institutional ethos. Prof Pandey highlighted that the domain knowledge developed at an IIM is not only limited to cognitive abilities but to effective skills as well. The Idea behind case methodology is to build the comprehension skills of participants and provide them an opportunity to process, analyse and synthesize a real-life situation from various perspectives. The simulations and business games, a part of the case based pedagogy, facilitate experiential learning. Lastly, Prof. Pandey advocated that PGDM being a professional course, helps develop a mind-set for empathy. He had strongly asserted that the ability to communicate is what professionalism is all about.

    The second panellist, Prof. Jagdeep S Chhokar addressed the student that new batch has a huge responsibility on their shoulders as institutions are not built in a day. He said that Humility is the most important virtue that builds a great manager. Prof. Chhokar pressed upon the importance of case based teaching methodology, which facilitates learning from experience and simulation of real-world. The Institute ethos are that students should be participants and teachers should be facilitators. Facilitation of learning is at the heart of IIM pedagogy. On culture of IIM Ahmedabad, Prof. Chhokar said that the basic mantra is ‘Doing the best you can in whatever you do’. The only stupid question is the one that hasn’t been asked. Be inquisitive, keep asking questions and learn how to learn.
